Krathong is a container made from natural materials such as banana leaves, banana sheaths, or corn husks, decorated with flowers, incense, and candles.
Paying homage to the water goddess: Many people celebrate Loy Krathong to honor and seek forgiveness from the water goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha, for any pollution or misuse of the water. This is a central theme and reflects the importance of water to Thailand’s agrarian society.
Appeasing water spirits: The festival may have evolved from older Brahminical festivals to appease the spirits of the river and offer thanks for the year’s rainfall.
Buddhist traditions
Venerating the Buddha: King Rama IV suggested that Thai Buddhists adapted the festival to honor the Buddha.
The floating candle in the krathong venerates the Buddha with light.
Another belief is that the floating offering pays respect to the Buddha’s footprint on the banks of the Narmada River in India.
Symbolic cleansing: Floating the krathong is a symbolic act of letting go of past transgressions, grudges, and negative feelings. Some celebrants even place a lock of hair or a nail clipping inside the krathong to represent casting away misfortune and bad luck.
